Is this program suitable for me?

This program is aimed at anyone who has a grade 1 or 2 calf strain where you present with:

  • Localised discomfort of the muscle belly.
  • Some swelling.
  • A feeling of pain when trying to walk normally or performing a heel raise.

If you are not sure about your injury then we recommend seeking professional advice and obtain an accurate diagnosis. Use the flow chart below to get a better idea:

How does it work?

Rehabilitation is based on restoring function whilst the muscle fibres repair and regain their ability to produce force. This is a gradual process as we do not want to overload the muscle too early either re-injuring it or producing too much scar tissue.

The program is criteria based, not timeline driven. This means that you start at the beginning whether you have a grade 1 or a grade 2 injury and work through the tasks in each phase. Mark each task complete when you have learnt the treatment and exercises needed for that phase.

Only move onto the next phase if you meet the specific criteria. Different athletes will progress at different rates depending their injuries. Take the progress check quizzes to see if you are ready to move on.

Record your progress and make notes as you go using the ‘Take Notes’ button: These can be useful to look back on, or to show your physio at a later date.
